Assignment 2

The most interesting claim made by Tannembaum in Slave and Citizen that I found to be interesting was that slavery was very different in Anglo America, where slaves had no rights, than in Latin America, where black persons could buy their freedom. This surprised me because I was always taught the Anglo American side of slavery, the civil war which lead to the freedom of slaves. In Brazil it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary for a black woman to be walking around in jewelry and fancy clothes.
I did not know that there was two different super powers England and Spain could value the lives of slaves so differently. Each of these countries had reasons for their stance of how a slave should be treated. The Spanish went back to the devote faith in the Catholic religion. They claimed that their God created everyone equal no matter if that person is white or black. They thought of slavery as a unfortunate event that a slave could eventually get through and be free.  Whereas England took the science route in why they justified slavery. They claimed that slaves were not human; instead they were viewed as animal-like. The English scientists said that the white man is the perfect person and all else is lower.
These two different forms of slavery that were settled so close to one another can be so different really surprised me.  The two masters were poles apart in the way they interacted with their slaves.

  1. In Response to Michael Carney blog, he mentions the book Slave and Citizen by Frank Tannenbaum he claims major differences between Latin America and the Anglo- America social and racial norms towards slavery in these two colonies. This two colonies showed various differences in Latin America slavery was permitted but it wasn’t a racial method of their color of skin color like the mulattos, slaves had their own rights and beliefs in the Catholic church. Far away from differences from Anglo-America which they belief that black slaves were far from humans. Slaves were mentally oppressed. I liked that Michael differentiate the two colonies and explained how they were different according to the different beliefs they had towards slavery. He talks about the dominant race that whites portray in society. “English scientist said white men is perfect the rest is lower”(Carney). I suggest too write more about your personal prospective. Answer the following question. How would you describe race? Do you disagree or agree with the norms that these two colonies had. Include quotes from Tannenbaum to support the claim. Make sure to include your claim it’s a bit difficult for the reader to understand the claim your supporting. Over all I like your idea you should totally focus on the differences this two colonies had maybe talk about the new “biological type” now that you focus that white men is the perfect race in the Anglo-America but mulattos in brazil were beginning to populate in that country bringing mix race and creating “biological type.

    1. I would describe the race as unfortunate. These were human beings just as the white slave owner. They were in a horrible situation that were taken advantage of. I disagree with the Anglo-American way of how they justified how they treated the slaves because of science. They thought of these slaves as un-human.
